Spotlight Friday - celebrating poetry 4.07.17

Time to get ready for the weekend!
Kick up your feet and find a good place to read.
Sharing #booklove for your classroom or library.
Spotlighting a book or two because these books deserve the spotlight!

It's April which means many people will be celebrating poetry this month!  While poetry is something to celebrate, read and write year round, there is something about spring and reading about it in verse.  A few new poetry books and collections that you may want to check out!

Things to Do
Things to Do
by Elaine Magliaro
Although a book written in prose, each page reads like its own poem!  Following a child's day, a new wonder or discovery is written about, often in rhyme.  The vocabulary used makes this book a mentor text you'll want to share with readers.

Animal Ark: Celebrating Our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures
Animal Ark
by Kwame Alexander
Haikus written Kwame are sure to be wonderful, but the brilliant photography of Joel Sartore are sure to stand out with readers!

Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets
Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets
by Kwame Alexander, Chris Colderley, and Marjory Wentworth
This really is a wonder of a collection.  Each poem celebrates the style or mood of a poet.  Beautifully crafted, and sure to be used as a mentor text.  This book can be used in a variety of ways, whether as an entire book or with individual poems.  This is a staple for upper elementary through college!  And don't miss the impeccable illustrations by Ekua Holmes.

Keep a Pocket in Your Poem: Classic Poems and Playful Parodies
Keep a Pocket in Your Poem
by J. Patrick Lewis
Are you ready for Poem in Your Pocket Day?  I believe my friends have told me it will be celebrated on April 27 this year.  Need some poems for those pockets?  I bet you'll find some within the pages of this new book!

Happy National Poetry Month!

  1. I absolutely LOVED Things to Do! It's also a really fun read aloud. Have you yet read Joyce Sidman's latest, Round? That is also lovely!

I'm behind with the Alexander books, but will look for Lewis's. I LOVED A Poem in Your Pocket by Margaret McNamara--so sweet & poignant & a perfect poetry read!!
