Slice of Life is a weekly event hosted by Two Writing Teachers.
Stories.
How do we preserve them?
Many of you encourage your students to participate weekly in a Slice of Life format, and some of you have classes that participate in the March challenge.
I found a book this weekend that reminded me of the importance to share and preserve our stories.
Mr. Cornell's Dream Boxes
by Jeanette Winter
In the narrative biography, Mr. Joseph Cornell makes dream boxes. These boxes hold memories and dreams, made with materials he found in his community. This made me think of stories. Mr. Cornell preserved his stories in his dream boxes. We ask students to preserve stories through writing.
Maybe use this book with students to talk about ways to remember and share stories.
Sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteYour description makes me think of Matchbox Diary. Any book that gets kids to think about saving the stories of their life is a treasure.
ReplyDeleteI recently bought this book and am fascinated. Dying to learn more about his work.

ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful, Michele, will look for it! It reminds me of Paul Fleischman's The Matchbox Diary, similar idea. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I will need to see about this book. I wonder if it is similar to The Matchbox Diary. Love that book too about preserving stories.
ReplyDeleteAnother book I need to find! Thanks for the suggestion. I was also reminded of The Matchbox Diary and The Memory String.
