Last Week's Adventures
I missed last Monday's post - spent lots of time getting the yard ready. We had a gorgeous Memorial Day weekend - sunny and in the 90s! Probably a little too warm for gardening, but it really felt like summer. Here are some posts you may have missed:
June releases - picture books, nonfiction, MG, and YA!
organizing a primary library
some must read nonfiction
Picture Books
a house that once was
written by Julie Fogliano
illustrated by Lane Smith
Adding this to the Mock Caldecott long list - some of Lane Smith's best work to date. I loved the wondering and possibilities this book contains.
Saturday is Swimming Day
by Hyewon Yum
I think I am more comfortable in the water than out. A peaceful feeling washes over me when I get in the water.
But not everyone feels that way.
This book will be relatable for many readers who have a fear of swimming. Yum does a great job of acknowledging fear in a way that makes sense to young readers - having a stomachache until an activity is over.... Through small steps, our young heroine gains control over the unknown and eventually likes swimming.
A book to use to show growth mindset can occur over time.
Don't Eat That!
by Drew Sheneman
This is just a fun read aloud - I've got to squeeze it in before the year is out!
Bear has left the zoo and has been unceremoniously left in a park. Luckily a young scout sees the hungry bear and decides to help it (in order to earn a badge, of course). She must stop it from eating the most ridiculous things and find food - not an easy task when you're feeding a bear!
Poetry
For Everyone
by Jason Reynolds
I'm going to need more time with his words. What amazes me is how he always gets it right.
Every.
Word.
Middle Grade
Babysitting Nightmares: The Shadow Hand
by Kat Shepherd
Note this series because it is going to be popular with young readers. A combination of babysitters and scary books..... what's not to love? Any series with the word "babysitter" in it is instantly popular. Scary series are always high on checkout lists. Combine them? It's an instant hit.
Meet 4 friends - Rebecca, Clio, Maggie and Tanya - not only are they besties, they are besties that babysit together! In this first book, we quickly find out something is wrong with their young charge, Kyle. They quickly put together they will have to visit the Nightmare Realm in order to save him.
It's nonstop action that will keep kids reading. I'm looking forward to this series!
Publishes tomorrow!
I have some more reading to update you on but this weekend was too hectic to write anymore updates. I'll be back next week with more to share. And #bookaday starts Thursday for me, yippee! Hope you have a great reading week and I'll be back next week with more updates.
Babysitting Nightmares does sound like a book that will be popular with kids. Lucky you that you can start #bookaday so soon! Not for two and a half weeks for me.
ReplyDeleteBabysitting Nightmares sounds like one I need to introduce my preservice teachers to! I am very eager to get my hands on a house that once was. It looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI have The House That Once Was, just haven't reviewed yet. It is lovely. And I also just got For Everyone, looking forward to it! Thanks, Michele
ReplyDeleteGreat books! I'm trying to read every book Jason Reynolds has written, but he keeps putting out more! Definitely another to add to the top of my TBR.
ReplyDeleteI need that Jason Reynolds book. Now. I'll have to go find it.
ReplyDeleteAnd Babysitting Nightmares--late elementary or early middle school?
Happy reading this week :)
Oooh, these look so good! I love Hyewon Yum's art style, it's so sweet!
ReplyDeleteI thought that For Everyone is a great letter of encouragement! Definitely one to share with anyone who needs a boost! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to reading a house that once was - on my TBR list, for sure! I, too, have been enjoying this weather. I'm probably not going to get as much reading done this summer as I thought I would -- the kids are out and about, active all over the place. Have a wonderful reading week!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Babysitting Nightmares! Definitely a book that will appeal to young readers. Saturday is a Swimming Day is new to me so will definitely check out once my summer vacation begins. 8 more days until my #bookaday!
ReplyDeleteA Fogliano / Smith collab seems absolutely awesome - I am thrilled to see that we have it available in our library! Will definitely borrow this. I just borrowed For Everyone and I asked my 28 yo nephew going through some existential crisis to read it, and it says it hits him exactly right where he needs it. :) Will have to read it myself very soon.
