It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 2.15.16

This weekly post comes from Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee and Ricki at Unleashing Readers.  It's a great source to find new books to use with your students.

Last Week's Adventures

Oh my, have you seen The Knowing Book by Rebecca Kai Dotlich?  It's a beautiful text and has gorgeous illustrations by Matthew Cordell.  Many uses for mentor text - read here.

Have you ever read a line in a book and you just can't stop thinking about it?  That's how it is for me when I read Natalie Lloyd's books.  Here are some lines from her newest "The Key to Extraordinary".

February is known as Black History Month.  Whether you celebrate this month or all year round, here is a list of books to use.

Picture Books

I Love You Already!
I Love You Already by Jory John
4/5 stars
I love this book more than the first book.  The banter of Bear and Duck is even funnier.  The lines sillier.  When I read this book to students I had one have the best belly laugh as she heard the two characters argue!

President Squid
President Squid by Aaron Reynolds
3/5 stars
All I can say is if Trump reads this book, I'm scared for the outcome!
This is a book to use for a mentor text for when the character doesn't change - when you don't like a character the whole way through.

Peep and Egg: I'm Not Hatching
Peep and Egg: I'm Not Hatching by Laura Gehl
4/5 stars
I love Joyce Wan's illustrations in this fun book for young readers.  Great book for trying new things.

Middle Grade

The Only Girl in School
The Only Girl in School by Natalie Sandiford
3/5 stars
What would it be like to be the only girl in school.  Our main character, Claire, lives this drama and explains it all in letters to her friend.  Trying to deal with middle grade boys and some unfair teachers leaves Claire with a tough year.  But with some small victories and good lessons along the way, Claire learns how to be tough and succeed in a boys world.

Haven't read as much over this long weekend as I thought I would.  Lots of future blog posts written, though!

  4. I'm waiting for The Knowing Book, out next week! You're lucky to have already seen it! I had to laugh at your comment for President Squid, will certainly look for that one. Thanks for telling about The Only Girl In School, sounds like it will fit very well in the middle grades. Thanks Michele.
