#mustreadin2017 spring update 4.06.17

Time for the spring #mustreadin2017 lists!  I'm doing ok with my list.  I remember I started out ok last year, but around April things started falling apart.  To help with that, I've divided my list up into months.  I front loaded a lot of books hoping that if I didn't get to them, I would have room to get to them in later months.  We'll see how this strategy works!  As you can see, I've already missed 1 book in February and 2 in March.

Here's a quick recap of the books I have read!

A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2)
A Court of Mist and Fury
by Sarah J. Maas
I added this book because I finished the first one as part of my #mustreadin2016 list (which I finished early this year!).  Oh.  My.  Gosh.  Not sure how this is considered young adult because it is very R rated.  Maybe NC17 (is that still a thing?).  But wow, what an amazing world to escape to!  I love reading about the faerie world.  I cannot wait for book 3 - May come soon!

Chains (Seeds of America, #1)
Chains
by Laurie Halse Anderson
encouraged to read by Jason Lewis
I know I have found great historical fiction when I can pass a book off to my very picky 11yo.  If there is a trace of nonfiction in it, she's not going to read it.  Not only did she read Chains after I recommended it to her, she's finished the other books in the trilogy.  If only I had her reading time....

The Serpent King
The Serpent King
by Jeff Zenter
encouraged to read by Victoria Coe
I remember when Victoria first told me about this book.  It was late 2015 and it wasn't going to be published until March 2016.  I had it preordered and I was so excited to get to it.  But as usual, life gets in the way and I didn't get to it.  This book was added very quickly to the 2017 #mustread list.  And glad I did.... wow.  Jeff Zenter has some writing chops.  I love his characters and how he crafts them.  He can write the next phone book (do they still do those?) and it would go on my TBR!

Fangirl
Fangirl
by Rainbow Rowell
This is another book I've owned for quite a while and just hadn't gotten around to reading.  I really liked Cath's story.  For whatever reason, I couldn't get into the fan fiction bits, which is a shame because I already bought Carry On awhile ago.  I think I enjoyed Cath's story even more than Eleanor and Park.

Capture the Flag (Silver Jaguar Society Mysteries #1)
Capture the Flag
by Kate Messner
Another book I've owned for a really long time.  I'm glad I finally got to it because I know we have readers for this series at school.  I'm looking forward to book talking this one soon.  And then I just need to hurry up and read the next two books so I can get those out into readers hands too!

Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2)
Scarlet
by Marissa Meyer
encouraged to read by my sister
My sister and I read Cinder together last year.   I loved that it got her reading life started again.  Since then she has read the others in the series, where I got sidelined and stopped after Cinder.  I think I loved Scarlet even more.  Looking forward to the next books.

I'm looking forward to my April reads - Catching Thyme and The Reader!

How has your 2017 reading been going?  Did you make plans?

  1. Hi Michelle! I love the way you planned your reading. I'm a planner too but didn't think of organizing mine by reading months. I keep seeing THE SERPENT pop up again and again as a must read. Did you know he just came out with another book in March, GOODBYE DAYS. I must add both to my list! So many books, so little time! Thanks for sharing! ~Amy

  3. Fun to see how you made your list, and it seems to have helped! I loved The Serpent King too, and Zentner's new book came out last month. I may never get to the Cinder series. I didn't read it long ago, and now there's too many others. Maybe someday? I have another of Kate Messner's books on my list, have enjoyed all of her work. Thanks, Michele!

  4. We bought the Chains trilogy for our household - they are all titles I want to read. Glad your 11 year old enjoyed them! I loved Cinder and the next titles as well! They are really well done. Great progress!

  5. I really like your idea of dividing your reading by month. I think I would be hopeless at following a schedule like that, but I might try it. I'm with Linda on Cinder: just might never get to it, even though it has come so highly recommended from so many (including my husband, who loves it!). But so many new books coming out all the time, and I read so few series anyway.... The Serpent King is one I had decided definitely not to read, but your review here makes me reconsider. Might get it at the library today! (Just what I need: more books to read!)

  6. I too look at my daughter and envy the reading time, although I would not have read as much as she does at the same age (sports!). I have somehow missed Capture the Flag even though I had three Kate Messner books on my list. I have Cinder on my list this year and hope to get to it soon. Counting Thyme was a book that I enjoyed last year, so I hope you have a great reading month. I think you will also enjoy The Seventh Wish and All Fall Down (have the sequels handy if you are a series reader).

  7. I'm pretty sure that I couldn't follow that schedule, but I'm impressed at how organized it looks! The most I can do is try and read at least three from my list a month. So far I'm a bit behind.
I started Cinder and got hooked. I ended up finishing up the whole series within a couple of months. I haven't read A Court of Mist and Fury, but have just started Throne of Glass. So far I am enjoying her writing, so I might end up reading that one. Fangirl is the only one of Rainbow Rowell's books that I really enjoyed.

  8. So many good ones on this list! I can't wait to start the Sarah Maas series! That's the only one from your list I haven't read. LOVED all the others! I hope THE SERPENT KING gets made into a movie! And you can't go wrong with Kate Messner. Everything she writes turns to gold! CHAINS is perfect. I've yet to go on with the series, though. Maybe those should be on my #MustReadin2018 list!

  9. Wow, this is a great list! I loved The Serpent King and just started his new book last night--excited to see if it's as good as that one was. As I read down your list, I realized that I have also had Capture the Flag on my list for a long time, too--I'll have to make sure to check it out. Glad to hear you liked Fangirl--it's in my library bag right now, waiting for me to pick it up (loved Eleanor and Park, so I'm encouraged that you thought this one was even better). Love, love, love your monthly list format--can't wait to hear what you think of Counting Thyme and The Seventh Wish when we get to the next update! Good luck staying on track and happy reading! :)

  10. I loved the Seeds of America trilogy so much! It was a long wait for Ashes, but so worth it. Glad your 11 yr old loved them (and I'm not surprised!)

I loved Fangirl too (and I'm with you--the Cath sections were far more powerful for me than the fanfic ones)

  11. I love your strategy for reading. I should probably be more organized about my reading! Your list has some new-to-me titles that I can put on my own tbr list.

  12. Hi, Michele,
I'm posting my #MustRead list late and reading everyone else's even later-- but I'm getting some good ideas for adds to my TBR list!

Chains is such a good book! I love that it addresses things from the Revolutionary War period that most people don't really know much about. Laurie Halse Andersen is an amazing researcher and does such a great job with this genre. I'm wanting to read the 2nd two books as well!

Capture the Flag has been in my classroom library forever, but I've just never gotten around to reading it. Your review has encouraged me to pull that one out to read. :)

Taking a peek further down your list, I see Counting Thyme-- which I read last summer and really loved! I also see The Pirate Code-- is that the sequel to Hook's Revenge? I read Hook's Revenge last year and thought it was lots of fun and immensely enertaining!

Thanks for sharing your list, and good luck as you continue to whittle it down as we get closer to September!
