SoL It's a Secret 4.01.14

Slice of Life is a weekly event hosted by Two Writing Teachers.

I've known about this meme since before I started blogging.  In fact, when I first thought about blogging, I thought about trying this out on a weekly basis.  But I quickly talked myself out of it.  Why?  Because I hate writing.  I have such a hard time coming up with the words I want to say.  And if I want to sound professional, forget it.  It takes me forever to write and I usually need someone to look it over and make it sound... well, better.
I didn't always feel this way about writing.  When I was younger, I loved coming up with my own stories.  Sometimes they were "memoirs", sometimes stories I had made up.  I'm not sure when the switch happened.  My next writing memory is writing reports for school.  I would write them up and then beg my dad to fix my writing.  He would make everything sound so good.  I don't know how my teachers didn't know my dad was helping me! (looking back, they probably did...)
Flash forward to now.  In a moment like this, where I can ramble, I can write.  But ask me to write a report that the school board or parents are going to review, it's major language block.  Not writer's block.  I know what I want to say, I just can't find the words.
So, I'll try this out.  Maybe with a little more consistent practice, I'll be able to find words, at least a little quicker.  That's what we always tell kids. I may not always have anything to write, so I'm not committing to this weekly.  But I'm going to try and see what happens.  Any good writing suggestions???  Please leave any ideas in the comments!

  1. Yahoo! You've started on a journey and I think the more you do this the better and easier it will be become. Everyone has these problems you describe but don't be discouraged. There is much joy to come from writing if you give it a little chance, and you've done that today. Way to be brave.

  3. Michele, welcome to the supportive online writing community! This is the way to do it - jump right in. To be a teacher of writing, you must be a writer first. Live the life, struggle, celebrate along the way (Ruth Ayres) -- and that is what will nudge you to want and need to write each week! And the more you do it, the easier it becomes ... sometimes. Of course, there will be challenging days, but push through and write on! Glad you are here!

  4. Michele, Welcome! I think you will find that this community is so supportive you will stop worrying about how you write and will start to focus on what you write. For me, the more I write, the more i notice happening around me and that makes it easier to find things to write about. This is a wonderful community...can't wait to read more from you!

  5. I think that you already jumped the first hurdle...you Sliced! Way to go! As for advice, when I decided to slice every day in March I set aside time to write and I had (still have) about 10 drafts of ideas just waiting for me to be inspired again. That way I felt that there was always something I could be working on:) Good Luck! I can't wait to read more!

    1. I know that's a good place to start - write down some ideas. It seems like when I sit down to think about them, that's when I draw a blank!!!

  10. Welcome, Michele to this great community of writers. I can remember the first slice I wrote when my daughter (Michelle) challenged me to join her in the March challenge. I read, reread, rewrote and somehow pressed the publish button. Each day got a little easier (especially when I read all the comments). I have found that I notice so many more things around me and something usually pops up to write about. Look forward to many more slices.

  12. I am so glad you are doing this! Once you start looking, I think you will be amazed at the things you can write about. This community is the best! I felt the same way you did when I first started, but it did not take long to feel welcomed. Now I have so many writerly friends and I miss them when I don't get to read their words. I just finished the March challenge where we write everyday for the month of March. I do think I had withdrawals! Welcome! Just be yourself and let YOU shine through your words.
