Spotlight Friday - presidential election 1.08.16

Time to get ready for the weekend!
Kick up your feet and find a good place to read.
Sharing #booklove for your classroom or library.
Spotlighting a book or two because these books deserve the spotlight!

I'm sure the fact that it is a presidential election year hasn't escaped your notice.  The presidential hopefuls seem to be everywhere these days and in the months to come we're going to hear even more from them.

I recently found a book that teaches children about presidential platforms - the beliefs a candidate runs for and stands in.  Big concept for young readers.  But try this book:

Monster Needs Your Vote
Monster Needs Your Vote
by Paul Czajak
illustrated by Wendy Grieb
published by Mighty Media Kids

Monster decides to run for president and it is explained to him that he needs to run for something, what could that be?  After thinking of a few ideas, Monster comes up with a new idea.  I'm not going to spoil it for you because for me it is the heart of the book.  It's a great book to help children a big idea.

And what about our presidential candidates?  There have been quite a few new picture books about Hillary Clinton that have been published recently.  I love reading about her background and the events that lead up to where she is now.

Hillary Rodham Clinton: Some Girls Are Born to Lead
by Michelle Markel
illustrated by LeUyen Pham
published by Balzer + Bray
an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers

This is a new book that was published this past Tuesday.  Written by the author of Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909, Michelle Markel, does a wonderful job spotlighting Hillary's accomplishments and focusing on her platform that human rights are everyone's rights, including women.

Illustrated by the immensely talented LeUyen Pham, I needed multiple reading of this book to drink in the detailed illustrations.

The back matter was informative, giving us additional information about Hillary and a wonderful illustrator's note.  I enjoyed reading about Pham's feelings about Hillary as she researched and talked to others about her.

Enjoy these two wonderful books about a very current topic!
