Celebrate This Week! 6.14.14

It's always good to end the week on a positive note.  Sometimes we concentrate on the negatives.  We have a choice.  Choose positive.  Choose to celebrate.  I will be joining Ruth Ayres and her weekly link-up, Celebrate This Week.  Check out all the other celebrations HERE

This started as its own post, but never was completed.  So, it's now put in as a celebration.  Yes, I'm celebrating summer reading!  I have some goals I want to accomplish and I've pulled books that are going to help me accomplish those goals!  I know I probably won't read everything I've pulled.  And I know there will be other books coming my way that will push some of these books to the side.  But, goals are good!  I'll list titles and come back and cross off what I was able to get to and update this post before school starts in the fall.  So here's what I've got:

1.  Read some book series that I've really wanted to read, but just haven't done:

The Land of Stories, books 2 + 3 by Chris Colfer
Countdown and Revolution by Deborah Wiles
The False Prince trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen
The Testing trilogy by Joelle Charbonneau
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
The Unwanteds series by Jennifer McMann
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

2.  Get through my TBR pile!  Well, I'll never actually get all the way through it over the summer, but at least make a dent is a reasonable goal.  I have a middle grade TBR list, a young adult TBR list and an adult TBR list!  I need to get busy :)
Middle Grade
Absolutely Almost by Lisa Graff
How to Outrun a Crocodile When Your Shoes Are Untied by Jess Keating
Dash by Greg Armamentos
The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson
The Spy Catchers of Maple Hill by Megan Frazer Blakemore
The Secret Hum of a Daisy by Tracy Holczer
The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier
Nightingale's Nest by Nikki Loftin
Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee
Under the Egg by Laura Marx Fitzgerald

Young Adult
we were liars by e. lockhart
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
The Summer of Letting Go by Gae Polisner
the impossible knife of memory by Laurie Halse Anderson

Adult
The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
Dream It! Do It! by Marty Sklar
Inferno by Dan Brown
Goodnight June by Sarah Jio
Catching Air by Sarah Pekkanen
The Possibilities by Kaui Hart Hemmings
Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore

3.  I've read some Newberys, but not as many as I should!  I'm going to read some Newbery Award winners and some Honors this summer.  I'll start with:

Paperboy by Vince Vawter
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien
One Came Home by Amy Timberlake

So many books.... hopefully more time than usual to get to them!  Plus I have a stack of professional books I would like to get to... Plus picture books... That's ok, it's a great problem to have!

And I just have to throw in one personal celebration.  My daughter had her dance recitals this week.  She was in 2 shows performing 2 numbers.  She did awesome!  I'm so proud of her - she gets up on stage and just lights up.  Big, beaming smile, beautiful arms and she nailed both performances.  She has a 4 inch shoe lift on her right shoe, that definitely sticks out when she's on stage, but she does not let that stop her!  After one of the shows, the owner of the dance studio (and her ballet teacher) came up to tell me there had been a relatively well known dance choreographer in the audience who came up to her to let her know how inspired he was by my daughter.  He noticed she didn't miss a step and loved her stage presence.  Very nice to hear!
Such attitude!

Hope you had a lovely week to celebrate!

  2. Celebrating reading is a great idea. I reread Bud Not Buddy recently. There is so much in that book to think about- as a reader and a writer. I'm going to organize my summer book list/ stack today. I noticed that TCRWP encouraged people this week to take a picture of their stack and post it on Twitter and their Facebook page. You should do that!

  4. What a nice compliment to hear about your daughter! I love your book piles...so many great ones there. You must make sure to read both We Were Liars and The Summer of Letting Go if nothing else. Your adult TBR pile looks similar to mine. Thanks also for the idea to post your plans. That would help me to prioritize my TBR as well.

  7. Loved looking at all your book stacks! I have had a lot of fun gathering books and creating new shelves of what I want to read this summer, though it seems like that's always growing and changing. I also hope for lots of reading serendipity this summer! And an adult TBR pile! What a revelation! I occasionally think to myself, I need to read more adult books, and then I never do. Maybe I need to set some adult reading goals too!

  8. Congrats goes to your daughter! :) Your book stacks are amazing - best wishes in having all the free time you can find to finish them. Are they your books, or do you visit the library every day? :)
