Nonfiction Picture Book Wednesday - picture book biographies for Black History Month 2.15.17

Every Wednesday I join Alyson Beecher from kidlitfrenzy and other
kidlit bloggers to share wonderful nonfiction picture books.
The intention of today's blog post is to give professionals that work in the
education field new nonfiction reading material and ideas to use
with students to promote a love of reading nonfiction materials.

February is Black History Month.  Here are some new picture book biographies that would be perfect to share this month.

  1. I'd love to get the Fredrick Douglas book, will have to wait because of so many holds. Thanks for the one about Ann Cole Lowe, new to me, Michele. Love Preaching To The Chickens!

  2. I love the child-centric focus of Preaching to the Chickens. And the art was gorgeous.

  3. LOVED Preaching to the Chickens so very much!! Sublime text and art. And I'm a chicken fan too. Perfect to read with the March books! It made me love John Lewis even more! What a true and presidential hero!

I also really liked the Lena Horne book, and am looking forward to the one on Douglass. I love Floyd Cooper's art!

  4. Sadly we learn so little about these great historical figures here in Canada - to be honest, I'd never heard about Frederick Douglass until I was an adult, and I learned about him through American book blogs! There's such a gap in my knowledge, and surely the knowledge of many of my fellow Canadians, so these picture books are right up my alley, as well!
