Nonfiction Picture Book Wednesday - celebrating the seasons - 4.01.2020

Wednesdays I join Alyson Beecher from kidlitfrenzy and other
#kidlit bloggers to share wonderful nonfiction picture books.
The intention of today's blog post is to give professionals that work in the
education field new nonfiction reading material and ideas to use
with students to promote a love of reading nonfiction materials.

Celebrating the seasons this week!

Bear Goes Sugaring by Maxwell Eaton
Bear Goes Sugaring
by Maxwell Eaton III
This book was so fun to read!  I've seen other books about making maple sugar, but this one really stuck to me.  Of course, if you've read the author's other books, you'll know he usually uses a voice in his writing that has some humor to it.  This nonfiction book features talking animals, so definitely an element of fiction, but it does keep the information from being too formulaic and adds some humor.
I can see kids getting really into the idea of making maple sugar.  This may be the perfect time to try it out - have any sugar maples in the backyard?

The Reason for the Seasons by Ellie Peterson
The Reason for the Seasons
by Ellie Peterson
This book tackles some of the false beliefs some people have about why we have seasons and replaces it with the science behind those ideas!  Perfect book for studies about the Earth's patterns.

And a few fiction books:

Green on Green by Dianne White
Green on Green
written by Dianne White
illustrated by Felicita Sala
This lyrical story names colors seen in the typical four seasons.  Within the illustrations is another story with a family preparing for the arrival of a new baby.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak
Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring
by Kenard Pak
I really enjoy this series.  Pak does a great job showing through words and illustrations the subtle changes that happen as one season exits and the next season begins.

In a Garden by Tim McCanna
In a Garden
written by Tim McCanna
illustrated by Aimée Sicuro
Told in a lyrical poem, a community garden goes through changes over the course of 4 seasons.

Hoping we see more Spring weather soon!  I need something that helps lift my mood during this time.  However, with nicer weather comes more people being outside, and during our Stay at Home order, it's causing more people coming together.  Go outside, but stay away from each other, please!

  2. It feels nostagic to think about going sugaring, probably because I've never lived anywhere that did it. Thanks for sharing that book & the others, too. I've seen Green on Green before & it looks wonderful.
