Every Wednesday I join Alyson Beecher from kidlitfrenzy and other
kidlit bloggers to share wonderful nonfiction picture books.
The intention of today's blog is to give educational professionals
new nonfiction reading material and ideas to use
with students to promote a love of reading nonfiction materials.
It is definitely the year of the blobfish!
In February we saw the publication of Jess Keating's new book Pink is for Blobfish. You can see my review here. While featuring a BEAUTIFUL photo of the gorgeous fish, this book featured even more pink animals. Told with wit, charm and information, this book has been a hit with even my most reluctant nonfiction readers!
Now, on May 17th, we get our next blobfish book - The Blobfish Book by Jessica Olien. Although it ends up featuring the same pretty photo of "the blob", the story goes on to feature other fish, as well as a cartoon blobfish that talks to the reader. Concentrating on fish that live in the deep, deep part of the ocean, we simultaneously learn facts about these creatures while also getting a running commentary from the cartoon blobfish. He apparently is not getting enough attention because he complains and moans and groans to the reader about there needing to be more blobfish in the book. Until he hears that the blobfish was voted the world's ugliest animal. Then there is some boo-hooing going on! As you can see, this book certainly has some humor as well! I think it's wonderful seeing authors add in the humor appeal - kids have no idea they are gaining information while being entertained!
And have you seen the amazing book, Glow: Animals With their Own Night-Lights by W. H. Beck? The photographs are absolutely amazing. The book is all about animals, especially those in the sea, that glow as a result of bioluminescence (animals that make their own light). The author details where they live, how they glow, why they glow.
Connect these books because they have sea creatures, because they have fascinating photographs and because the authors make it INTERESTING to read and learn!
